Abbaye De Valmagne

For over 8 centuries ago the Cistercian monks in the 12th century, had planted the vineyard to Valmagne Abbey, as in all their abbeys (most great Burgundy vineyards are Cistercian origin).
Since then, this land has always brought the vine. The wines were exported to Mexico in the 19th century, sold to Paris rue Mouffetard between the wars.
Technology and respect for the land, the culture of the vine is done mechanically, avoiding the use of harmful products and chemical fertilizers to the environment. Since 1999, the field of Valmagne Abbey was gradually converted to organic farming. We are proud to have achieved certification in 2005 "Quality Environment" under the control of AFAQ.
Vinification and bottling are using the most modern techniques, plot selection, pneumatic press, temperature control, and scrupulous hygiene (compliance with HACCP standards), air conditioning storage cellars, always being of Technology the terroir.
It was in 1138 that Raymond Trencavel, Viscount of Beziers, Valmagne founded the Abbey in the municipality of Villeveyrac, near Meze and Thau in Languedoc Roussillon. 12th century to the early 14th she was one of the richest Cistercian Abbeys in southern France. Benedictine abbey at its foundation, Valmagne Abbey will be connected as soon as 1159, the Cistercian order, second reform of the Benedictines, and therefore observe the moral rule, but also architecture that was defined by St Bernard. After a period of expansion and wealth, Valmagne Abbey was confronted with the Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion. Very damaged, Valmagne Abbey would not have too much of two centuries to recover its original splendor. But the revolution fell upon an abbey where the decline was already installed. The last monks fled in 1789 and Valmagne was sacked. Confiscated as state property the state does not keep this building and Mr. Granier-Joyeuse acquired it in 1791. After his death, his heirs got rid in 1838. The Valmagne Abbey was bought on July 29 this year by the Count de Turenne and was never sold, but the difficulties posed today, maintenance of such a building are always growing and responsibility of such a set is both wonderful and frightening. The present church, classical Gothic style, rebuilt in 1257, 24.5m tall and 83m long, was converted into a winery after the Revolution. The charm of the fountain of the cloister, the purity of the chapter room with his groin vault lowered warheads, the size of this majestic building are the Abbey Valmagne a prestigious historical monument of Languedoc Roussillon, many seat cultural events.
