Domaine de L'Hortus

Grandson of a winegrower, convinced that one could make great wines in Languedoc and a fierce desire to return to the land, Jean and Marie-Thérèse, settled in the combe de Fambétou, located between the mountains of Pic Saint Loup and La Bergerie l'Hortus, in the early 1970s.
A valley of wild beauty, deserted since the end of the war, everything has to be built: clearing impossible lands, stony slopes and abandoned terraces, it is also necessary to build cellar and dwelling house. And it is with the will of a conqueror and not a penny in pocket that the adventure begins.
At the start, only 4 hectares were cleared, then planted with AOP Pic Saint Loup. In order to familiarize himself with this unknown terroir, Jean did not make his first wine until 15 years later, for the 1990 vintage.
At the same time as the vineyard, house and cellars are built. Everything is built in a style that combines the architectural avant-garde with the woodland tradition.
As her four children return to the property, each bringing their own personality and experiences.
Today with its production in the three colors: white, red and rosé, with its property wines the Domaine de l'Hortus and its wines from the vineyards of the Domaine but also wines carefully selected from neighboring winegrowers (Bergerie de l 'Hortus), the name of the Hortus gained worldwide fame.
